Alice in Wonderland written in 1865 by a gentleman by the name of Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He used a pseudonym of Lewis Carroll. The Reverend Dodgson and the Reverend Robinson Duckworth were taking the three daughters of Henry George Liddell , who amongst other titles, was Headmaster of Westminster school, on a rowing boat trip along the river Thames in London.
The author’s middle daughter, Alice Pleasance Liddell, who was nine at the time was the subject of a make believe story. His story concerned a very bored little girl named Alice, who set off on a great adventure. The Reverend Dodgson included references to some of his own friends, and the little girls loved it.
The Reverend Dodgson turned his attention to enlarging on his “ literary nonsense” scribblings, and added even more to “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground” introducing the mad tea-party and a grinning Cheshire cat to his story.
He changed the title slightly into “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and added the drawings of Mr John Tenniel. It was first published in 1866 and was very soon sold out. Amongst its fans was Queen Victoria.
Alice enjoyed reading the story about her namesake so much, that she asked the Reverend to set it all down on paper for her. So on 26th November 1864, he handed to her the first copy of his book, a handwritten manuscript entitled “Alice’s Adventures Under Ground”.
To get you in the un party mood, here is our version, and very much abbreviated, story of Alice in Wonderland. Alice is sitting beside a river, leaning against a tree. She looks up and spies a white rabbit who is in a great hurry and carrying a watch. “No wonder you’re late” the rabbit says to her. “Why, this watch is exactly two days slow.”
He goes into a rabbit hole, and she follows behind him.
Alice finds herself in a long hall, with lots of locked doors, and sees a key, which leads into a garden, but it’s too small for her to pass through. She picks up a glass with “drink me” written on it (don’t do this at home children). She finds herself shrinking, so can go into the garden, but the key to the door is on the table that is now too high for her to reach. In a box under the table, a cake says “eat me” which makes her larger. And hits her head on the ceiling.
She cry’s so much that a flood occurs. It frightened the white rabbit who runs past, that he drops a fan. Alice picks it up, and before she knows where she is, is shrinking again, only more so.
While swimming along in her own tears, she meets other birds and animals who are all trying to get to shore. Amongst them is a mouse who she upsets, with talk of her cat.
Eventually they all get to the shore. Further catastrophes befall Alice, including growing incredibly tall at one stage and has terrible trouble with her clothing. She finds herself as a guest at a tea party, amongst others are the Hatter, the March Hare and the Door mouse. Alice could be excused for believing she had stumbled upon a Halloween party of some kind.
She has a dreadful time there too, as the other guests ask her many un answerable riddles. She leaves them and finds herself back in the hallway, eats part of a mushroom and shrinks enough to get into the garden.
In the garden she meets live playing cards, the King and Queen of Hearts. The Queen is not a nice person, she keeps condemning people to death “off with their heads” she shouts.
Trouble is afoot as the Knave of Hearts is accused of taking the tarts. A trial follows, and Johnny Depp sorry I meant to say the Mad Hatter causes riots with his evidence. Alice starts to grow again, knocks over the box the jury are sitting in and the wrath of the Queen falls heavily on poor Alice.
The Queen orders the cards (that is to say her guards) to execute her “off with her head”Alice hears her shouting. The next thing Alice knows is that she is laying underneath a tree and brushing the fallen leaves off her self is awoken by her sister to go home and eat.
